Harm Reduction
Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies to address individuals who are using substances or engaging in high-risk behaviors that can cause harm to oneself. It is about lowering barriers to well-being for everyone and placing everyone’s quality of life before judgment of their behavior. It is a philosophy and approach to life that encompasses many different segments of society. Some of the harm reduction tools and interventions utilized are syringe exchange and recognition and addressing an opioid/opiate overdose. These outpatient services are completely confidential and medically supervised which strive to significantly improve clients’ health outcomes based on individual levels of readiness.
We support our community by connecting participants to the programs that are right for them:
- OASAS at Housing Works provides a client-centered approach to substance use. We combine high-quality medical care with outpatient individual and group therapy for all substances.
- Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) involves using medications to treat substance use. Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) provides medications that help people manage their opioid use.
- Re-Charge is a sex-positive space to learn about safer crystal meth use and explore strategies to help people manage their use.
- Overdose prevention interventions include education for safer consumption, Narcan training, and Naloxone kit distribution to people seeking safer strategies and resources.
- Our syringe exchange and street outreach offer clean supplies to community members to mitigate the risk of HIV, Hepatitis C, and other STI transmission.
