What we do

We do what other public health organizations can’t- or won’t.

Housing Works has a “nobody left behind” ethos that drives our ever-changing landscape of housing, healthcare, and services initiatives. We value social justice, health equity, and public health innovation.

Currently, we operate:

  • 4 FQHCs (Federally Qualified Health Centers) which provide primary care and mental health care.
  • Multiple long-term residential housing primarily for people living with HIV/AIDs who have experience housing instability
  • An evolving portfolio of hotels which provide short-term housing for people coming to New York as asylum seekers.
  • A portfolio of hotels in partnership with MOCJ (Mayor’s Office for Criminal Justice) which provide short-term housing for people coming out of incarceration.
  • 8 thriving thrift shops, an industry-leading Cannabis retail shop, a bookstore café and bar in SOHO
  • Wrap-around services which include behavioral health, harm reduction, legal support, job training, case management, and more- all to serve our clients who are primarily New Yorkers who are facing homelessness, chronic illness, HIV/AIDS, substance use challenges, mental health challenges, and/or have a history of involvement with the criminal justice system.
  • A robust and highly impactful harm reduction program in Puerto Rico, called Intercambios, which supports the rights and well being of people who use drugs through a syringe exchange program, relentless advocacy towards decriminalization, and social education and awareness to reduce stigma.
  • An amazing team in Haiti working to support people living with HIV/AIDS to help reduce transmission, reduce stigma, and advocate for the rights of individuals marginalized further due to their sexual orientation.

In short, we do a lot.

Our businesses and dynamic fundraising events, like Fashion for Action, Art House, and Design on a Dime provide us with critical unrestricted revenue which allows us to develop and pilot cutting edge public health interventions, like the Undetectables, which we develop and scale to other organizations around the city to maximize impact.

Together we are doctors, cannabis connoisseurs, activists, residential aides, outreach workers, social workers, vintage lovers, public health innovators, lawyers, people who have been incarcerated, harm reductionists, abolitionists, people who have experienced homelessness, people with vision, people with heart, and people with a mission.

Culture and Benefits

Housing Works is people. We are people from all corners of the city and beyond who have a shared commitment to health equity, anti-oppression, and housing justice. We are a super diverse group of over 1,000 workers, who together make up many amazing teams across the organization.

Housing Works is a place to be authentic. Come as you are, dress comfortably, and get ready to dig in. Our goals are BIG, and there is lots for us to accomplish. We are clear about our goals, and we work hard to achieve ambitious strategic initiatives. We say yes – often – and that means the path to achieving our goals can evolve quickly. We share information, collaborate, value transparency and open communication. We value wellness and offer an ongoing program of meaningful wellness offerings for our staff. We come together when times are tough, hosting Community Conversations to process major world events, community events, or other moments that invite dialogue and togetherness. We tackle issues head on – we talk about politics, race, gender, sexuality, etc. This is a place for candor and dialogue.

We expect all employees to participate in our ongoing advocacy work. Housing Works was born through a subcommittee of ACT-UP, and the spirit of direct action and non-violent civil disobedience remains an important part of our culture. All staff members are expected to attend four advocacy events per year, in a capacity that feels comfortable, to ensure that we continue to have a powerful impact.

  • 1st year employees accrue up to 30 days of PTO, with 6 additional holidays

  • 2nd year employees accrue up to 33 days of PTO, with 6 additional holidays

  • 3rd year employees accrue up to 35 days of PTO, with 6 additional holidays

  • 4th year employees accrue up to 40 days of PTO, with 6 additional holidays

  • At the start of the second year of employment, employees can be reimbursed $100 a month for tuition while enrolled in an accredited education program, or can be reimbursed for student loan payments. This amount increases to $200 a month at the start of the third year of employment.

  • We invest in the future of our employees through 403B retirement funds. Employees can choose to set up recurring contributions – and Housing Works matches up to 3%.
